What there is to see nearby

The chalet sits on the edge of a region you could spend a week in without seeing the same thing twice: sixteenth-century painted monasteries, a princely citadel, a salt mine you walk down into on fir steps, pottery workshops and memorial houses.

The memorial house of the poet Nicolae Labiș, who died at twenty-one, is in the commune of Mălini — the same commune as the chalet.

The monasteries of Bucovina

The monasteries are why thousands of people come to this region every year. Built in medieval times, their outer walls carry frescoes whose colour has survived to this day — the blue of Voroneț, the red of Humor.

Eight churches of Moldavia are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, among them Humor, Moldovița, Pătrăuți, Probota and Voroneț; Sucevița was added in 2010. Important historical and religious works were written and copied at Voroneț.

Suceava Fortress and the Cacica salt mine

Suceava Fortress was built at the end of the fourteenth century by Petru I Mușat, fortified in the fifteenth by Stephen the Great, and destroyed in the seventeenth. It stands in ruins today but can be visited, and since 2005 it has hosted temporary exhibitions.

At the Cacica salt mine you walk down fir steps more than two hundred years old, mineralised by brine. Inside there is a Roman Catholic chapel 21 metres down, an Orthodox one at 35 metres, a salt lake, and a ballroom at 37 metres. It stays around 15 degrees all year, so take a coat.

Walks in summer, the slope in winter

In summer there are walks through the woods nearby and up Stânișoara as far as Crucea Talienilor. From there you can make out, in the distance, Pietrele Doamnei on Rarău and Vârful Toaca in Ceahlău.

In winter, the Pojorâta slope is 200 m from the yard and has a ski tow.
